sunday roundup eighteenWelcome to the second Sunday round up of the autumn. It’s a blustery, wet round up this week, so let’s see if we can put a smile on your faces with some highlights from the week.

We have a great competition lined up for you for October. Tracey Smith, founder of Downshifting Week and author of ‘The book of Rubbish Ideas‘ is giving away a signed copy of her book to one lucky winner. Find out how to take part.

We began the week with news of a company who are selling takeaway sandwiches in compostable packaging. Gone are the days of plastic wrap for these little beauties. Find out the name of the company and where you can buy them.

We announced the winners of our zero waste pledge and win competition. Were you a winner? Some of you have still not passed on your postal details to me, so you won’t be getting your prize until you do! Check the list of winners and find out if you will be celebrating today.

we picked up a news story that Martin Brocklehurst, head of external programmes at the Environment Agency said that recycling mixed plastics is “not any longer a choice” but something that the UK must embrace. Read the full story.

We had our weekly weigh in on Wednesday. Find out how we did this week.

The end of the week resulted in some mishaps. On Thursday I declared that sometimes only a carrier bag would do. Find out what tragedy happened to make me think along these lines.

On Friday I did some decluttering, but ended up with stuff for the landfill. Sometimes being green is not easy

Stay tuned next week for our October Dustbin Demon, take part in our monthly challenge and go and do some serious zero waste shopping with our great discount offer at one of my favourite online stores. Got something to say? Then come along and share in the latest discussions.

We’re also going to be doing some serious chocolate talk – don’t miss it because do we have a surprise in store for you!

I want to finish by sending my congratulations to one of our readers, Just Gai. She is on the last day of her own zero waste week in Bristol and I’ve been avidly following her progress. Go over to her blog and give her a cheer for all her efforts. She really is leading the way with her determination and resolve to get through this week without putting anything in her bin. Just gai shows how you can do this, even with a busy lifestyle.

Until the morrow then,
xxxx

Hi Mrs Green – you will be pleased to hear that I have just signed up for Zero Waste Week in Gloucestershire (I’d have done it before but only just realised that Tewkesbury Borough Council was included! Only been here a year and still sorting out who belongs to who!!!)
Quite excited – and a little nervous! Your blog, Gai’s blog and The Rubbish Diet are my inspiration!
    Wish me luck!

  2. Mrs Green says:

    Hi Karen,
Oh that’s fabulous – I didn’t realise you were a ‘neighbour’. Good luck with the challenge; Just Gai did really well with just 5 gms of waste during her zero waste week; which is utterly fabulous.
You’ll be a pro by the time January comes around and you could always have a practise week between now and then 😉

    Hi Mrs Green,
Am indeed a neighbour! So look out for “local” questions when I get stuck about where to recycle or buy something! Broke it to my family that there would be no crisps during Zero Waste Week and my husband’s practical reply – “put crisps in air tight containers the week before so bags go in the rubbish that week instead!” Looks like I have my work cut out!!!!!!

    That’s an absolutely beautiful picture!

  5. Mrs Green says:

Hey Karen, well please fire away with any questions and I’ll help you if I can. If I don’t have the answer then someone else most definitely will. 😀 to your husband’s comment!

Dottyspots; I’m annoyed about the picture because I cannot find details anywhere of who to credit it for. It’s really lovely and I would like to be able to give the artist / creator some kudos……..

  6. Kris says:

I’ve emailed for more details of Zero Waste Week although I’m terrified – I know how far away I am!

Like Karen’s husband I’m also pre-planning my strategy, is it cheating to make sure I have homemade lasagne in the freezer ready for that week? Or to plan a Chinese Takeaway as it comes in very useful reusable plastic tubs which I’ll wash and keep, and a paper carrier.

I don’t want to be guilty of making too much waste the week beforehand.

  7. Mrs Green says:

Hey Kris, well done for emailing for details. Don’t be terrified, the aim of the Glos zero waste challenge is just to get stuck in and have a go.
My take is that if everyone in the UK recycled just one more tin a week, that would be 60 million less tins per week going into the landfill. So it’s the collective that matters and that is what you will be contributing to if you decide to take part.
As for ‘cheating’, well, that’s up to your conscience to decide 😀
