Simple green tips

Sometimes we all want to go a little greener, a little more eco friendly, but we’re stopped due to lack of time or funds.

Here are some easy tips to help green up your routine…and not one of them requires an investment in anything new.

Is environmentalism a cult?

This was the question posed by John Nichol over at A Man’s A Man after hearing a Republican politician branding environmentalism a “cult”.

He explores the topic in all its glory and reaches his own conclusion…

About the Author ()

I am a long time supporter of the Green and Sustainable lifestyle. After being caught in the Boscastle floods in 2004, our family begun a journey to respect and promote the importance of Earth's fragile ecosystem, that focussed on reducing waste. Inspired by the beauty and resourcefulness of this wonderful planet, I have published numerous magazine articles on green issues and the author of four books.

The video John Nichol posted makes me so upset! It makes me feel like we have so far to go that America is never going to ‘get it’. I don’t know what it’s going to take for us as a culture at large to really understand what we are doing to the rest of the world. I just….I can’t even form words around what I am feeling.

I’m with you, Kate. It’s really pathetic that these nutjobs have to continue to say “make no mistake about it” and “it’s absolutely the case” when trying to prove their points. They want to convince their followers that those who care about the environment are some sort of cult who simply listen to what’s been fed to them…and that’s exactly what they are doing themselves! It seems so bizarre that they would put together a whole video, utilizing so many cliches and scare tactics (the little black hands outstretched, give me a break!), in an attempt to paint another group as being “a cult.” That is cult behaviour right there, “make no mistake about it.”

Similarly though, it is really sad that environmentalism frequently takes a back seat to the almighty economy. In the U.S., big business (which owns our government) frequently complains that restrictions on emmissions, water pollution, responsible forestry practices, etc., hinder profits (of course, they always say “prohibit prosperity” or “are detrimental to the American people,” but they really mean “make less money for us, because we want to be able to do whatever we want and damage the ecosystem to make more money”). Once we irreparably damage the planet, and we are plunged into ecological catastrophe, those damned profit margins probably won’t look so important.

But now I’m ranting, and I don’t want to sound like some cult leader. πŸ™‚

@Kate: πŸ™ some things get us like that don’t they? I find things get me down too but I find myself focusing again and again on solutions. It’s not always easy to keep upbeat.

@CarSue: Great comment; you’re right – the cult behaviours are happening elsewhere too and I find it deeply saddening that profit goes before all else. Maybe it will change when more people wake up?
