Win a SodaStream and reduce plastic packaging!

Win a SodaStream and reduce plastic packaging!

I’ve just been pouring (geddit?) over “Soft Drinks: Hard on the Environment“; a report commissioned by SodaStream to assess the environmental impact of soft drinks packaging.

Since doing our own zero waste challenge I’ve given up drinking water bottled in plastic. I used to drink it all the time and I can’t tell you how hard a habit it’s been to break and I admit to still using the odd bottle of water bought in glass <gasp>.

According to the report, the average person in the UK drinks 229 litres soft drinks per year!

Soft drinks; hard on the environment

Now I have to say from the onset that we do not buy any soft drinks. Little Miss Green, I’m proud to say has never tasted Coke. However, Mr G is partial to the odd tipple of carbonated water and I know that lots of people pack their trolleys with coke, fanta and other goodies, so I think this report is really interesting and might help people change their behaviours in order to help the environment.

SodaStream

SodaStream was around when I was a kid (and used to LOVE fizzy drinks). Alas Grandma Green never saw fit to grace our kitchen with one so I had to resort to sneaky cans of SevenUp bought with my pocket money.

In case you’ve never heard of them, SodaStream is a small machine that makes carbonated drinks from tap water. You attach a refillable CO2 gas canister, fizz up your regular tap water and add a cap full of flavoured concentrate. Each bottle of concentrate contains enough syrup to flavour 12 litres of fizzy water. And yes, you can buy Cola flavour 😉

Reduce packaging

The report states that each bottle of SodaStream concentrate saves 84% of packaging for every litre of drink consumed. So over the course of a year, the average household could replace 433 bottles of traditional soft drinks with just 45 bottles of SodaStream Concentrate.

If you transfer this saving to all soft drink sold in the UK every year (a teeth rotting 11 million bottles no less) we could replace the 11 million bottles with just 1178 SodaStream concentrate bottles. That’s a serious saving…

Zero waste fizzy drinks

The lovely people at SodaStream sent me one of their machines and a couple of bottles of concentrate to try. Little Miss Green was very excited to try it out as you might imagine; seeing as I’m the Mum from hell that won’t let her buy bottles of pop.

It’s very simple to use, a lot of fun (especially when the gas cannister makes a farting sound that has little children in fits of giggles) and it’s effective too. You really do get a sense of effervescence going up your nose, making you sneeze and giving you hiccups – just like the good old days, eh?

Reduce plastic

If you’re a soft drinks fan I would give this a thumbs up. There is an initial outlay for the machine, but I’m guessing you’ll save money in the long run. These machines are expected to last at least ten years and not only are you reducing the amount of plastic you buy, you are reusing the bottle that comes with it AND you can refill the gas cannisters which even come with some funky ‘return deposit’ system.

To get busy with the fizzy, follow SodaStream on Facebook or follow them on Twitter.

Win a SodaStream!

How could we keep such a gem to ourselves? We’re all for sharing the farty fun on my zero waste and the lovely people at SodaStream want one of you to get busy with the fizzy. All you have to do is leave a comment below and we’ll pick a winner at random in a week which means you’ll be able to put a new years resolution in place straight away to reduce your plastic packaging!

The lucky zero waster will win a SodaStream machine along with three of the latest flavour bottles – Dandelion & Burdock, Cream Soda and Cherry! (I can’t guarantee you’ll get the red model as shown in the photo). Competition open to UK residents only.

This is silly. Silly. Silly. We cannot consume our way out of this mess. Greenest option: NO plastic bottles, NO fizzy drinks – they’re vastly unimportant – and NO soda streams. The materials and energy used in manufacturing soda streams could be made into something helpful to the environment.

When I was young, I remember the local off licence used to sell Corona fizzy pop. It came in glass bottles and you had to pay a deposit on the bottle. There was not so much waste of plastic bottles then.

I have so many fond memories of soda stream. Cola was my favourite, plus the concentrate made amazing ice lollies. We used to go to a remote island in Scotland for holidays too and the soda stream came with us to save taking loads of bottles of juice. It was perfect x

  226. Paul S says:

Update – having read the comments, loved the one about watching thier neighbours kid make the drinks as it was too expensive to share – what great neighbours – bet he is bank manager or something like that now!

Reminds me of my parents always telling us kids the ice cream van had ran out of ice cream when the music is on 🙁

  227. Jane says:

I’ve always wanted one of these and last year I nearly bought one for the office. Adding fizzy water to fruit juice or providing fizzy water for meetings for the workforce seemed like a good idea. The trouble was the summer was so busy that it flew by and cold drinks were no longer needed. I hate all those large plastic bottles I have to squash after a meeting.

  228. pam says:

My Godmother had one of these and how we liked saturday nights- all three of us snuggled up in bed, a “Horror/vampire” film on (30+ years ago mind so quite tame) and a glass bottle of pop from the soda stream! No one else I knew had one and we thought it really grand! We were FAR too poor to have our own and those saturday nights were a mini holiday away from it all. Happy memories and good to see the Soda Stream back again. I think it was way ahead of its time in the use of only glass bottles and making your own, recycling the fizz at the shops and getting another one!
