South West Love Food Hate Waste Campaign

Last week I held my own personal ‘zero food waste’ challenge week here at Chez Green. Not so far away, Just Gai was participating in her county council’s Love Food Hate Waste inspired challenge.
Local authorities across the south west are supporting Love Food Hate Waste, and are encouraging residents to pledge to reduce their food waste. The aim is to collect 25,000 pledges from across the South West area.
Gloucestershire is joining in the fun which starts today, and you can sign up on their pledge page.
By making a pledge to reduce your food waste you will be joining thousands of other people across the South West who are committed to saving some money and benefiting the environment. The Love Food Hate Waste campaign reckon we can save up to Β£50 per month by using up leftovers, keeping an eye on Use By date labels and proper portion control.
There are prizes to be won for your efforts – a Gourmet Weekend for four in Devon or Cornwall, a cooking lesson for two in Bristol or a meal for two in Dorset.
Pledges include:
- Plan my weekly meals and only buy what I need
- Make a shopping list this week and stick to it
- Only cook what I need for each meal
- Use any leftovers to create new meals
- Check use by dates in the fridge and freeze anything I won’t eat in time
- Keep my fruit and veg in the fridge (except bananas!)
- Keep a food waste diary for one week to see how much and what types of food I throw away
I’ve pledged to use any leftovers to create new meals and keep a food waste diary for a week.
The little differences we make at home will save money and reduce the harm wasted food has on the environment. Not only do you save food waste from rotting in landfill and giving off methane which is a potent greenhouse gas, you also save the water needed to grow the food and the energy needed to transport it.
If anyone is living in Bath, Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire or Torbay, why not visit the South West Love Food Hate Waste page and take part!
And if you’re not from this area, don’t worry, I would love you to join in anyway! Leave a comment below and let us know what you pledge to do.
We’ve got heaps of tips to help you; read Maisies tips and our ‘reduce food waste‘ page for inspiration. At the bottom of this page you’ll see links to last week’s food challenge week where you can find out exactly how I wasted no food at all.

What lovely prizes for such a worthy cause. I’m now pledging to go to the fridge and eat all my leftovers from the weekend….and I promise that’s not because I’m just feeling hungry from reading your post π
My other pledge is to make a banana cake from the ones in my fruit bowl that are turning a more darker shade of brown. We’ve got some lovely hot Thai soup I made at the weekend which would go well with a bowl of cous cous. So that’s my lunch sorted for today. π xx
I pledge to use up the large bowl of green tomatoes that has been sitting on the side since last week ………. even if it means *more* chutney!
@Almost Mrs Average: banana cake and hot thai soup – sounds lovely, Mrs A
@Poppy: How’s it going poppy? I have loads of green tomatoes looking at me too!
We haven’t got round to sorting them yet!! Hopefully I’ll get the missing ingredient tomorrow and they’ll be sorted by towmorrow evening π
@Poppy: prod, prod …. all done then Poppy? π
@Mrs Green: lol Mrs G!! Yes, all done! Also made a batch of jam today with the remaining ripe tomatoes and a bag of blackberries from the freezer! Yes I know it sounds weird, but it’s all fruit and it tastes fine π
@Poppy: Waheee; well done – I still have a bucket of apples tripping me up every time I walk into the kitchen ….
