organic fair trade chocolate with recycled packagingHave we got a treat in store for you, our dearest readers!

October 13 – 19th is chocolate week! And we are celebrating true zero waste style.

We’ve found there are a few zero waste chocolate bars out there, most notably the large 100gm bars that come wrapped in paper and foil. Generally though the choices are slim, with most companies favouring plastic or foil lined packaging to keep light and flavours away from the product.

However, I’ve been talking to Sarah who is co-owner of Cocoa Loco.

Cocoa Loco is a small family firm who produce handmade organic products in a way that minimises the impact on the environment. Their products are certified as organic by the Soil Association and are Fair Trade.

Re use, reduce and recycle are watchwords in their business. Around a third of household waste is packaging. An estimated 6.3 Million tonnes of packaging enters British homes each year and with only around a third of household waste being recycled, that’s a lot of packaging going to landfill.

With Cocoa Loco gifts you are encouraged to leave only crumbs (and even they can be put out for the birds!)
Tissue paper and cardboard boxes can be reused or recycled. Cellophane wrap and packets are biodegradable which can be put in your compost bin. Finally, the wood wool, used to protect gifts in transit can be reused for packing material, composted, used to start fires or used to line animal hutches.

Astonishingly the amount of waste going to landfill each week from Cocoa Loco is less than a standard domestic dustbin full.

That’s incredible isn’t it?

Businesses and manufacturers get a lot of rap for being more wasteful than households, yet Sarah and her team are leading the way and showing that this doesn’t have to be the case.

If only more companies could be so ethical and conscious in their approach to business.

To celebrate chocolate week, Sarah is offering one mighty lucky winner a wooden gift box full of goodies. Worth Β£34.99 the box contains a bewildering away of beautiful hand made chocolate such as truffles, brownies and everyone’s childhood favourite; chocolate buttons.

To be in with a chance of winning, fill in a contact us form, mark your entry CHOCOLATE WEEK and tell us what your favourite zero waste indulgence is. It can be food, a toiletries product, clothing, entertainment or anything you like.
Tell us what makes you feel good and at the same time is good for the environment!

Competition closes 19th October so get your thinking caps on and be sure to enter in time.

It would have to be walking with my little boy in his pram. Getting fresh air, even in this changing weather, and watching his eyes as he notices the trees makes me so happy!

lol Anilla, being pushed along under the trees with the sun shining through the leaves is my earliest memory. My mum tries to say I must have imagined it, but it’s a very vivid memory πŸ™‚
