Zero waste media work
Add article to favouritesAs I mentioned in Wednesday’s post; we had an ‘open house’ for the media. We wanted to try and get some local coverage for next week’s zero waste week.
Little Miss Green thought media work sounded easy and decided to demonstrate how to use our home made can crusher. She forgot to mention the word ‘can’ at any point, so talks about crushing spaghetti that she has eaten for breakfast. You’ll see she should be eating more spinach, not spaghetti!

In a similar vein, Mr Green decided that interviewing couldn’t be that hard and so decided to interview me. Can you spot his mistake?

You are a natural for the screen. Develop an on-screen persona.
Before you can run you have to learn to walk. When films are made they do many takes shouting “cut” when shooting is imperfect. (Pushing the hand down the face from the nose is a sign of nervousness. Edit out imperfections)
Interviews are best when both people are on screen. Can the young one direct a camera or is there an automatic? It is a good way to contact the public and a group, say with Mrs A or some other friend, has better interaction possibilities.
What you dont want is too many, all struggling for the limelight.

We’ve been staycationing, and unfortunately we’ve upped our garbage output. (Frozen pizza boxes are bizarrely not recyclable.)
We did compost and recycle all we could though.

You have no idea how long it took to get Catus Green to mew in the right place! No,,, LOL it’s all spontaneous, really. She pretty photogenic for nearly 16 years.
Mrs A – spaghetti crushing is certainly easier at the age of 7. And we can always rely on the cat to voice her opinion on all things, regardless of whether we want her opinion or not.
John, you sound as if you know quite a lot about TV work? I don’t feel a natural **at all** I’m very nervous (as my hand gives away 😉 ) and hate seeing myself on the screen. But the last vid had a good response and people found it helpful. We just felt like having a bit of fun by showing our ‘warts and all’ out takes to end the week. It’s been pretty high intensity around here lately, so it’s good to have a giggle.

What a great word – I’d never heard of it before. I thought it was something about staying in someone’s house to cat sit when I first read it 😀
Weird about the pizza boxes – do they compost if you shred them? we have to do the best with the resources we have and you’ve done admirably…..
Mr Green, Pussus green is clearly a natural wouldn’t you say? She has many more years experience than us – I guess she’s around 105 in human years 😀 If you have that much hair, virility and voice by 105 you’ll be doing well 😉

I was just comparing to a standard tv interview. The trick seems to be to make it look professional and relaxed. You are a natural in that you are just being yourself and you know your subject. People can relate to you and it will allow you to make a bigger impact. I, and I am sure others, fully support you in this. There is also space for humour and Mrs A could make a good partner in a double routine or you could keep it in the family.
Hey hey – what do you think John, I could always try my Tommy Cooper routine to answer those questions like “How do you slim your bin?”….With my Fez on, hands at the ready, deep voice….of course the answer is “Jus like tha”. And what about creating the Morecame and Wise Stripper routine in the kitchen..you know, the one with the grapefruit, pancakes and toast. Add a few bins Mrs G and we’d be in our element. Anyway, Mrs G your hand movement is just a minimal matter so don’t worry. When I’ve got a camera pointing at me, my sign of nervousness is gurning. ;-D

All ideas are welcome but must be suitable for children, although I could force myself to a private screening. Humour would be a big plus and I think a situation where there a few presenters, all vying for camera attention, would be a hoot.
A duet between the girls would be good for a Zero Waste video. I wonder who would hog the show?
Oh it wouldn’t be me hogging the limelight – I’m more than happy to be in the background making cups of tea to keep the troops happy 🙂

I do not believe you. When the 2 of you start talking about your personal achievements I am certain one-up-manship would take over. “My bin is more empty than yours” “Oh no it isnt”,” oh yez it is”, and then the pancakes start flying, a regular Judy and Judy show. I can see it all now!
Joking aside, I emailed you about the best newcomer prize. Could that be made a separate prize, rather than a draw? It could be a money prize or a special recycling equipment. I would certainly chip in. It would make it a possible video presentation with you doing your host routine. What do you think?
LOL – Mrs G, I think I would be with you and the teabags ;-D And John, no need for concern or excitement, there’s no stripping in the Morecame and Wise sketch. The only thing that would be stripped is the bin of all it’s waste 😀
A best newcomer prize sounds good
John, I think your idea is great, but I’m maxed out on the competition entries as it is. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes to co-ordinate it all, that I can’t take anything else on at the moment.
That’s a good thought for next year’s zero waste week though 🙂

The competition is excellent in its present format. As the numbers grow, can there be any doubt of this eventuality, changes can take place to suit the new circumstances.
What an ingenious contraption! I spent my childhood jumping on cans without the extra fun of the can-crushing gizmo. It’s a great idea for making recycling more fun!
The can crusher is a home made thing from 2 pieces of wood and a strong hinge. It’s a little DIY project we’re going to share here at some point, once we get the video together. We wouldn’t usually let Little Ms Green use it, but she really wanted to ‘have a go’ The crusher is actually easy to use, if you weigh over 4 stone and it can crush the heavy steel cans much easier than the commercial ones, because it’s a bigger device.
Yes please – definitely post the instructions for the can crusher. I would probably be able to persuade my husband to do the hinge-fixing and creation part and then I can be the user (luckily I am over 4 stone).
😀 This post has been a long time coming; I’ll get Mr G onto it this week. It’s so simple; I think even I could manage to make one at a push 😉
